been a while

Weird. It's been so long. I think I forgot how to do this.

I rediscovered livejournal recently after finishing the last season of Battlestar Galactica on DVD. I was searching for fanfiction, surprise surprise.

It's like 10:30. I'm not sure what made me write this, but maybe I'm interested in keeping a journal again. Not sure. It's been a while.

<lj-embed id="12" />

Very cool. In comparison the Hillary Clinton one is excruciatingly painful. Okay, it's like that even when NOT compared. Ouch.

The McCain spoof one is hilarious though.

<lj-embed id="13" />

Right?

funny things

So this is hilarious.

<lj-embed id="11" />

Has anyone seen that kids show with the little girl Lola? She has an older brother named Charlie and this little boy Harry sounds just like her. I was cracking up.

In other amusing news, I voted today. That's not the funny part, but what I thought was funny was that there was this guy outside the school handing out little cards with the people he wanted you to vote for on them. Now, I've seen that in lots of places... but the generally accepted method is to hand them out BEFORE someone votes, not when they're leaving.

Teehee.

cable providers are sleazy mo-fos

Wow what a scam. So next year, right, TV will be broadcast digitally, so everyone will need a converter box who doesn't already get digital cable. That's NEXT YEAR. I called RCN tonight to cancel the landline phone service Dustin got for some inexplicable reason, and the lady on the phone wanted me to get the converter box now.

I'm all for getting it early. But the government is issuing coupons to people to buy converter boxes FREE. RCN wants to charge me the low low price of $2.95 per month to rent one, when it's not even mandated until next year.

Thing is... I bet a lot of people who aren't informed about this fall for it and end up paying all kinds of money to rent something they don't even need for another year. I did the research for my Grandmother and she should be getting her coupons soon.

grand theft life

Vice City is so much easier when you cheat and get a tank. But I still can't manage to break that dude out of the police station. I have grenades and a shotgun, but neither are particularly good for closed, indoor spaces swarming with cops.

On the flip side, my Taxi company is now making me money. So add that to my Estate and I'm getting $10000 every ten minutes or so of play time.

HP fanfic rant

The author of that sick fanfic "A Time and Place to Grow" on P&S has posted a sequel. More corporal punishment of a 16-year-old boy by an older man who is not a relative. It physically makes me ill that the site allows that sick trash to masquerade as "genfic".

*gags a little*

I've complained, but the story is ridiculously popular and even won a vote to become a featured story. I wish I could get the mods of the site to understand the psychology behind something like that and what it says about the author. Because while there are a few other stories on P&S with disturbing themes (a few involving self-harm, rape, etc...) it's never Snape abusing Harry. That is expressly forbidden, but this utter shit is slipping through the cracks.

Ugh. I'm really squicked out here.

Bone Marrow Donation

The National Bone Marrow Donor Registry is doing something pretty awesome for mothers' day. Between May 7 - May 21 you can be added to the registry for free at any of hundreds of donor drives all over the country. This is a pretty big deal for everyone. If you're white, of nothern-European descent, volunteering yourself for the registry usually costs between $30-$70. This is to cover the cost of tissue-typing. Most minorities pay less than that, but it's very rare for it to be free.

This is such an important thing to do, especially if you're a member or a minority or ethnic group outside northern Europe. The odds of finding a donor match are 1 in 5 if the patient is white, and up to 1 in 100,000 if the patient is hispanic or native american. Those are not good odds.

Joining the registry through one of the donor drives will be FREE from May 7 - May 21. There are no needles; they take a painless swab of the inside of your cheek. That's it.

You can find a drive near you by going to www.marrow.org. The only qualifications are that you be between 18 and 60 years of age and meet basic health history requirements (you can't donate if you've had cancer in the past, or if your immune system is compromised because of disease).
